I wanted to bring more awareness of this ongoing issue and talk a little bit about the idea of decolonizing science. The idea that science and Indigenous Peoples are on opposing sides have long been perpetuated in US culture; however, we can trace many scientific ways of learning and knowing back to Indigenous Peoples. Oy. That will be the hardest part of it all. This is where unconscious bias comes into play. Often I find the most important things we need to unlearn are the ones we don’t realize we are doing.

I got super sidetracked when writing this because of all of the different texts and articles about decolonizing science in general! I think a lot of our “professions” in the US at least tend to be oppressive – such as the medical field, science, engineering, etc. We value western perspectives a great deal more and equate all other ways of learning and knowing to primitive. I agree with you… much left to learn… and unlearn at that.

I completely agree about the accessibility of academic texts – first through databases then through language. I hope to make my way through that reading list!

This is awesome. I had no idea that such things were happening. Though, this isn’t surprising to me, sadly.

I never thought about that relationship between indigenous peoples and science- but you are totally right. I also wonder often, who are we to tell people what is real and what isn’t? There is much left to learn, why can’t we start with learning from each other and embracing science from many avenues?
Great post. I am about to get lost in those additional links…

Completely agree with you on decolonizing science, the from horrors of racial science to knowledge erasure! And also yes on the academic texts, I wish more stuff were open access and easy language but for those who can, need to read up on this stuff.
Thanks so much for the fantastic link, started following Chanda on Twitter Immediately😁
