August 2016 TBR and Haul

tbr.august.2016

I have decided to write monthly posts about the books and e-books I have acquired over the past month and what books I plan to read this month. In the future I will be writing in my intro how I did in the past month meeting my reading goals. Depending on how many books I do acquire, I will try to highlight some of them in the post.

July Book Haul

Books

No physical books… hmmm that’s interesting. I am sure that will not be the case for August!

E-Books

26883558The Ballad of Black Tom by Victor LaValle
This short book was the pick for #DSFFBookClub for the July 15-August15, 2016 period. I immediately got it for my e-reader and devoured the story. A very nice read which deals with Lovecraftian lore and racism in New York City. I plan to review this after reading the original Lovecraft story before August 15th. Stay tuned for that!

The Complete Collection of H.P. Lovecraft
I picked this entire collection up because I was looking to read The Horror at Red Hook after finishing The Ballad of Black Tom (mentioned above). Well, the entire collection was a 99 cent e-book so I thought… why not? I may be reading other Lovecraftian stories in my future…

22095547Serpetine by Cindy Pon
I saw a retweet on the #DiverseBookBloggers hashtag of the author Cindy Pon (@cindypon) advertising a sale of the electronic version of her book. Needless to say, I picked it up right away! I am not an avid YA reader and sometimes I get tired of this genre, but I am really looking forward to Serpentine.

Black Bread White Beer by Niven Govinden
I found this book on a list of 200+ books by authors of color. From what I have read of the description and reviews, this is a heart wrenching shorter story about marriage, love, and grief. I am looking forward to a powerful read.

Doubt by C.S. Tobisman
I received Doubt as a part of the Kindle First of the Month program. It looks like a legal thriller, which is a little out of my wheelhouse. Although it is not high on my tbr list, I am sure I will get to it at some point.

TBR August

235258Yellow: Race in America Beyond Black and White by Frank Wu
I try to keep at least one academic book in my reading list to continue to learn about pressing issues in my country and in my community. This book takes a look at race between the binary of black and white. Where do Asian Pacific Islander folks fit in? I have had this in my currently reading for a loooooooooooooong time now and I am committing to finishing this book this month! I hope to write a short review / snapshot when I am done.

Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality by Eliezer Yudkowsky
I swear I’ve been reading this book for a decade. Okay, I started it a while ago when the author was still writing the fan fic. But I stopped for whatever reason. I recently picked it up this summer when I found I could send pdfs to my e-reader and it was much easier for me to read. Now I am chugging along and I hope to finish it this month!

Wordbirds by Liesl Schillinger16130620
I received a copy of this book through a Goodreads giveaway a while back and had not really looked at it since. Wordbirds is about… words, as you probably guessed. Newly minted words at that and how they relate to our modern culture. It looks like an interesting read at the least and I am excited to finally knock it off my shelf.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie
I have owned this book for a while (like most of the books I own and haven’t read…). I really enjoyed Flight by Sherman Alexie and I knew I needed to read this one as soon as possible. I hope to feature it in a review too!

Stretch: A Dance with Dragons by George R. R. Martin
Okay, I am on the last released book of the A Song of Fire and Ice series. It is my stretch for this month to simply start A Dance with Dragons. That way, my partner and I can start the Game of Thrones TV series. I might as well take the plunge because the last novels in the series might never be released.

  1. I’m finally going to start reading Red Hook and Ballad. Aghh, sorry I took so long. I will go through all the tweets in the hashtag and start live-tweeting my reading as well. Thank you so much for participating. I look forward to discussing Red Hook with you, and also reading your review.

So glad you picked up Serpentine. It was such a steal, how could you not!?

I’m loving your August TBR. You truly have diverse and eclectic taste in reading. 🙂
Hah, don’t rush yourself to finish or even read A Dance With Dragons yet. Who knows when book 6 will be out? Though, it’s actually a pretty good book. Much better than A Feast For Crows.

    • I’ve been going back and forth with A Dance With Dragons… First, I don’t want to forget what has happened (although I will forget before the 6h book releases… Thank goodness for wikis :)). And Second, I did not enjoy Feast of Crows that much and I have heard it’s a good book. Who knows, maybe I won’t even finish my planned TBRs for August, that’s always possible!

I look forward to discussing Red Hook and Black Tom with you as well! It was and… interesting experience reading them back to back.

  2. Great list. I will look forward to your review of Ballad of Black Tom. The August TBR looks interesting as well. I spy George R martin. I havent read anything by him since the size intimidates me.

    • Thank you! George RR Martin… Yeah, I’m not sure about starting A Dance with Dragons. I figure the Song of Fire and Ice series will be around *forever* and since he is writing slowly, I don’t feel and about stopping in the middle of the series. His books are super long and I think I owned A Game of Thrones for a couple years before I took the plunge (I like your word intimidating to describe it :)). After getting into the universe, I found the books went pretty fast for the size.
